#Review of Lost Mate by Dirk Greyson w/a rafflecopter giveaway! @dirkgreyson

Title: Lost Mate
Author: Dirk Greyson
Series: Standalone
Genre: M/M, Paranormal Romance, Shifters

Release Date: May 1 2017

Edition/Formats Available In: eBook & Print

Blurb/Synopsis:

Wolf shifter Falco Gladstone knew Carter McCloud was his mate when they were in seventh grade, but school and the foster care system tore them apart. Years later, Falco is second in command of his Michigan pack, serving under an uncle who cares more about his own power than the welfare of their people. The alpha orders Falco to marry and produce offspring—but Falco’s already found his mate, and mates are forever.

Carter’s lonely life is turned upside down when he detects a familiar scent on the wind. The mates might have found each other, but their happily ever after is far from guaranteed. Falco’s commitment to Carter puts him at odds with his uncle’s plans, and when one of the alpha’s enforcers starts shadowing the couple, something must be done—something that will either cement their relationship or destroy it once and for all.

Excerpt 2

“How was your day?” she asked, wiping her hands on her apron as she turned around. Then she frowned. “Hey, what’s wrong?” She could always read him. His dad and uncle said he needed to get better at hiding his feelings, but he suspected that no matter how good he got, his mother would always be able to tell. She pulled out the chair next to his and sat down. “Something’s changed.”

“I know.”

“I mean, you smell different, like….”

“I can feel my wolf, Mom. Just like that, he was there, and… I don’t understand.” His heart rate had returned to normal and the tingling had subsided, but the intense thoughts of Carter remained. He could almost still smell him.

“You’re young to discover your wolf, but it happens. You need to tell your father so he can help you through your first shift. You’ll be ready soon.” She smiled proudly.

“Mom,” Falco asked as a wave of uncertainty he rarely experienced washed over him. “Can I ask you… what does it feel like to find your mate?”

She chuckled, stood, and went to the stove. “Well, it’s like the world stops for a few seconds and there is nothing but her, or in my case, your father.” Her eyes turned wistful as she leaned against the counter. “Your mate will have the best scent, perfect for you—one you can never get enough of for the rest of your life. Everything will click, and you know there will be no one else for you as long as you live. That will be it. Your wolf will want no one else.” She sighed and turned back to the stove. “You have plenty of time for that later.”

Falco nodded, but he knew he’d already found him. A guy—his mate was another boy. He wasn’t sure how the pack would feel about that. Not that it mattered; he was only thirteen, and no one was going to believe him anyway. “Thanks, Mom.”

“Sure, sweetie. Go finish your homework so you can talk to your dad later.” She continued her work, humming softly to herself, and Falco went to his room. He meant to do his homework, but his thoughts wandered to Carter and refused to let go. He’d found his mate, at least he thought so, and now all he had to do was make sure.

Over the next week, Falco managed to run into Carter at school on a regular basis, and each time his wolf grew stronger and more insistent, not to mention the way his body reacted when he got near. God, it was like he was on fire. The more he was around Carter, the more he was convinced Carter was his mate.

It took almost two weeks for Falco to become sure that, at thirteen, he’d found his mate, something some wolves never do their entire lives. He was thrilled and vowed to spend more time with Carter, become his friend, and really get to know him better.

The following Monday, Carter wasn’t in school. Falco figured he was sick and looked for him each morning, but Carter never showed up in school again.

Two weeks. He’d met his mate, and two weeks later, he was gone.

So if anyone knows me, they know that I don't read shifter books.  Throw in M/M and that's another don't read for me.  I don't judge, I just have never found a M/M author that I truly have liked.  Don't get me wrong, I've got recs out the ying yang for them and goodness, I've tried, really I have.  But then someone recommended Mr. Greyson and I've never looked back.  He is fast becoming an auto-buy author for me.  Yes, I know.  *shakes head*

Again, back to the book.  This is such a sweet book between two people that found their mate when they were kids only to have them taken away.  I really felt for Falco in regards to this.  The above conversation with his mom is fresh, sweet and innocent.  Later when he finds Carter again, my heartbeat faster.  I loved his reaction to Carter at that moment.

Carter is only half wolf and it took some time for him to come around to figuring out that Falco is his mate for life.  I also liked that Falco waited for Carter.  Carter has had boyfriends before and his last one is a douche, so he isn't that keen on the Alpha saying that they are mates

Throw in some truly believable secondary characters...Mildred and her kids and PC.  Pork Chop.  Love it.  And you have a great story about finding your one and only true mate.  Also, I actually kinda felt sorry for Willard in the end.  He justed wanted Claude in the end but Claude was too far gone in his hatred and power.

Do yourself a favor and pick up this book or anything that Mr. Greyson has written.  You will not be sorry.  Thanks Anna!

Blurb/Synopsis:

The last thing Tobias, alpha of the small Greenview Pack, expects is to find a lost human asleep in his storage building. As soon as he sets eyes on Pete, Tobias knows they are destined mates. But he cannot act on his attraction, no matter how much he feels compelled. Exposure to the human world could mean the end of their way of life, so he decides to help Pete get a room until he can reunite with the tour group he separated from.

But Tobias’s disgraced half-brother, Zev, has other ideas. He takes a liking to Pete and decides he wants what Tobias has—both his position as pack leader and his mate. Tobias can’t let that happen, but protecting Pete means keeping him close, which only increases the mounting tensions between them.

Duty, protection, desire, and secrecy clash as the darkness within Zev rises to the surface, and only Tobias can save his mate—even if he never plans to tell Pete that’s what they are.

Excerpt 1

Darkness was falling fast. Pete turned toward a rustling sound behind him before hurrying away from it. He was freaking out and he knew it.

He wanted to kill his best friend, Roger, a million times over. “Go out west, see something different—it’ll inspire you.” Roger’s voice in his head was a full octave higher than normal, and Pete wanted to strangle it.

He just wanted to find his way back to the trail or to any sign of humanity. But that wasn’t going to happen. He’d only stepped off the trail because he’d seen an amazing grove of wildflowers. How dangerous could that be? He must have gotten turned around in the damned glen and left it from a different spot than he’d come in. Now he was wandering alone at night in the middle of the wilderness. How stupid could he get?

“Don’t answer that,” he said to an owl calling in the trees above him.

Pete stopped under a large tree to catch his breath and held it for support because his lungs burned. He needed to think. But all he could think was that he was going to die and no one would ever find his body. The only people to care would be his editor and his publisher, who would wonder where his next book was. That’s all. Well, and Roger, but if Pete died, he fully intended to haunt the bastard for the rest of his life. Maybe he’d crack open each can of beer in Roger’s fridge so it went flat every time. Or maybe he’d poke him with a stick just when he was starting to fall asleep. Yeah, he liked that idea.

“Take that, you bastard.”

He had checked his phone long ago and found no signal at all. He pulled it out again and saw a single bar. Praying to God, he dialed 911, but the bar disappeared and the call dropped. In the dying light, he looked around, and through a slight clearing in the trees, he spotted a hill and figured he should make for it. He might get a signal up there and then he could call someone. They could send a helicopter and pluck him off the edge of the precipice and just out of reach of a bear who thought he was dinner—okay, this wasn’t one of his book plots. He needed to get his head in the game. In a few minutes, the light would be gone completely, so he slipped off his pack and rummaged inside it. Making the hill before nightfall was out of the question. He guessed he was stuck here for the night.

“Matches, matches….” His fingers curled around a plastic container. “Thank God.” Pete looked around, found some sticks, and pulled them together in the center of a relatively clear area. That should do for him to build a fire. At least he’d have some light and a way to keep warm. He gathered tinder and some smaller sticks, opened the container of matches, struck one, and lit his kindling. The leaves caught, and Pete placed tiny sticks on top, then added a few more until he had a fire going.

“Thank you,” he said, sending his vibes up toward the heavens.

Of course, the universe decided to answer and not in a good way. The sky flashed and thunder rolled over the land around him. Just what he needed.

Pete packed away the matches and continued to feed the flames, hoping the storm would go around him. As he added more sticks, the flames leaped upward enough to let him see the woodland floor around him. Lightning flashed again; the thunder grew louder and the earth vibrated with the roar of sound that died away to a growl.

It took a full second for Pete remember thunder didn’t growl. He looked up from the flames, across the clearing, and into a set of yellow eyes. That was all he could see until the cat prowled low and closer, catching the light in his thick tawny coat. A cougar. Great, just what he fucking needed. He added more sticks to the fire, then grabbed the end of a burning one, and thrust it at the cat, who seemed bold and probably hungry.

Pete’s first instinct was to run, but the cat would be faster than him and pounce on his back. He had seen enough movies where the stupid kids did just that and one of them ended up as cat food.

He put a stick in the fire and added a second and a third, then pulled flaming pokers from the fire, and held them in both hands. He knew it was probably stupid, but it was the only defense he had.

The cat prowled the edge of the clearing, getting closer, mouth open, displaying huge teeth. Pete jumped back and swung as the cat leaped toward him. He missed, but the cat retreated and resumed prowling and stalking him. Pete hoped there weren’t more of them waiting to pounce on his back. He thought big cats like this were solitary hunters. At least he hoped to hell they were.

“Go away. Shoo.” He started yelling and making noise. It was all he could think to do, waving the sticks in his hands to make himself look as big as possible. The cat hunched down, and Pete knew he was coiling his muscles for a strike. He swung both hands as the cat leaped off the ground, propelling himself toward Pete. The hot ends of the sticks connected with the cat’s head, and he heard a searing sound and the scent of burning hair. The cat yelped and fell, then bounded off into the woods just as the sky opened up and drenched the area. The leaves of the tree overhead held off the water for a few minutes, but eventually it was too much and water poured through the thick branches.

The fire sputtered and made a valiant effort against the water, but soon it faded out, not hot enough to last. Pete took refuge close to the tree trunk, hoping for some shelter, but receiving little. He was soaked through in minutes, cold, shivering, and shaken by the nearby lightning and thunder.

bookreviewI'm truly in love with this writer.  I read both of his personas and he doesn't write a bad book.  As most know, I don't read much straight M/M but I'm in love with Dirk Greyson.  He writes a complete book.  Great dialogue, awesome pacing, characters that you love and/or hate and cheering for the couple to finally admit that they love each other and want to be together.

Pete is so cute.  Yes, cute.  In fact, Tobias calls him cute in the book and it fits him.  He's a city slicker for sure, but quickly adapts to his surroundings; even if he thinks he doesn't.  Pete also has a great roommate that brings some much need humor in the story for me.  Plus, took the news that Tobias was a shifter just like any other human would have.  Surprised, non-believing and hurt, too when it came to Tobias to claim him as his mate.  I really felt bad for them at this point.  Of course, that's when Tobias' mom literally slapped him upside his head to get him to think.  Loved that scene.  BTW, she is an awesome secondary character.  Brings much-needed depth to the pack and what happened in the first two books.

Oh yes, there are more books in the series and no, I haven't read them.  You don't need to enjoy this one because those events are explained to the reader.  I might, though, go back and read the first book in the series.  I would love to see how Tobias and the rest of pack dealt with betrayal and how Katherine's pack fits into everything.  Oh yes, there is another pack in the story but they don't overpower the story.  In fact, to makes Tobias realize that he can't do everything and that's it okay to ask for help.

Tobias is also a great character.  He isn't overbearing like some alphas in the shifter world.  He has depth, a sweetness and a need to please everyone but himself.  Cue his mother and in a way his overbearing sister to the rescue.  His sister is a piece of work but in the end, I grew to like her.  In fact, I loved to read more about Greg and Brick.  They intrigued me.  The whole pack is great and I think that if I read at least the first book in the series, I would understand them more.

Overall, I loved this book.  I typically don't like shifter books and since I'm new to the genre of M/M, this book is on my keeper shelf.  I really like Mr. Greyson's style of writing and how you just fall in love with characters.
